2021 Survey of Surveys on Top Technology Trends

Background: Historically (15+ years) we have participated to various extents in what was a joint CFIT & FERF annual member survey of what are important finance technologies/areas. At various times Microsoft, Gartner and CSC were annual sponsors of this survey. In the current over-surveyed environment the Emerging Technologies Subcommittee changed approaches this year and surveyed a number of the existing annual surveys and recapped those surveys and attempted to pick out the top half dozen trends.

Purpose: CFIT got into looking at surveys to provide another input to committee members on what are important topics at this intersection of finance and technology.  In that way, along with committee member inputs and discussion, these survey recaps can help guide CFIT and its subcommittees on what topics to pursue.

Summary results: Across the Annual Surveys these six topics stood out:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Total Experience (customer / employee)
  • Anywhere Operations & Future of Work
  • Virtual Reality & Augmented reality
  • Zero Trust Security
  • Monetization of Data

The various surveys of course come at this from different angles and different zoom levels, but commonalities can get teased out. First level details on how each of these six topics is defined can be found in the individual Survey recaps behind this summary.

Surveys reviewed:

  • Accenture
  • Deloitte
  • EY
  • Forrester
  • Gartner
  • KPMG
  • PwC

Behind this recap, the Summary of each Survey is presented. Our emphasis was in pulling the material together and discussing it so there are different formats and details levels attached depending on which member was reviewing the survey. Links to the surveys themselves either included or can easily be found via internet searching.

What didn’t rise to the top?

Blockchain, while mentioned did not rise to the top. Perhaps just “too low level” vs these rolled up topics; or a cooling off?

Internet of Things (IoT) also was mentioned but didn’t rise up. Yet both for industries and at a personal level it is likely to play a big role.
