FEI's Private Company Roundtable, in conjunction with PwC, will discuss the cybersecurity challenges private companies face, the risk management measures CFOs can take, and current and expected policy implications in a webcast, Cybersecurity: Challenges, Policy, Solutions.

In a recent PwC survey, respondents report that the number of detected incidents in 2014 soared to a total of 42.8 million, a 48% jumped over 2013. The report added that the total financial losses attributed to security compromises increased 34% over 2013. In addition PwC said that information security programs have weakened due to "inadequate investments in information security. while the financial costs of investigating and mitigating incidents grow year over year.

Mounting Threats

While many middle-market organizations think their size makes them a less temping target for hackers, their cybersecurity risks are at least as great as their larger counterparts.

In a 2014 PwC survey, organizations with revenues of $100 million to $1 billion experienced a 64 percent increase in the number of detected information security incidents, compared with a 48 percent increase overall.

Private companies are vulnerable to automated threats in which hackers probe for software vulnerabilities, as well as attacks in which hackers target smaller organizations in hopes of finding a route into the organization's larger business partners.
